# 5.1.1 O que é CSS?

#### O que é CSS?

CSS é a sigla para **Cascading Style Sheets**, ou, em português, **Folhas de Estilo em Cascata**. É a linguagem usada para definir a aparência visual das páginas da web. Enquanto o HTML serve para estruturar o conteúdo (como textos, imagens e links), o CSS serve para **deixar tudo bonito**: escolher cores, tamanhos, fontes, posicionamento dos elementos e muito mais.

Enquanto o **HTML** define a estrutura e o conteúdo da página, o **CSS** determina como esses elementos serão apresentados visualmente. Com ele, é possível:

* Definir **cores**, **fontes** e **tamanhos**;
* Ajustar **espaçamentos** e **alinhamentos**;
* Criar **animações** e **transições suaves**;
* Desenvolver **layouts responsivos**, que se adaptam a diferentes dispositivos.
